Get To Know Me

Hi, welcome to the first blog post on RoryFleming.com. My name is Rory and I’m a strength and conditioning coach from Dublin, Ireland. I’ve decided to start getting my thoughts and ideas around training and the industry in general out there and so this blog was created. My goal, to help shed light on all that is both good and bad in the field of strength and conditioning, highlight my favorite training methods while also aiming to educate through materials and resources that I have found incredibly helpful throughout my young career to this point.

But before we kick-start into all that, I’m going to share who I am and let you get to know me in this short piece.

As stated already, my name is Rory Fleming. I’m 23 years old and I’ve been training general population, athletes, and teams for the last 6 years. My road to strength and conditioning was rather fortuitous but I’m thankful every single day that it’s played out as such.

As a kid and teenager, I played Hurling and Gaelic Football with my local G.A.A. club. I had absolutely ZERO interest in the gym and really knew nothing about enhancing athletic performance through a strength and conditioning programme. I believed perfecting skills and running would help me on the pitch and that weights would make me slow.  How times have changed!

Like most young people growing up I hadn’t a notion what I wanted to do after leaving school, even while doing my final year exams in school I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do in college. For a long time that year I had my heart set on becoming a teacher, it’s what my mam and sister both do for work and the summers off were pretty appealing. But I was told by my career guidance teachers “Rory, you have to put more options down on your application forms!!” so I searched every current course in Ireland that had the word ‘Sport’ in it. In no particular order, I just inserted them into the form without any research at all. Near the closing date for applications, I felt compelled to change the order and I put Sports Strength and Conditioning at Limerick Institute of Technology at the top of the list… and that’s where I ended up. 4 years later I left with a B.Sc Honors degree in Sports Strength and Conditioning.

Currently, I work for Noel Flynn at Athletic Body Coaching Gym in Lucan, Co. Dublin. ABC Gym is a semi-private personal training gym that caters to people of all fitness levels. In 2015 I was very grateful to have Noel bring me on board as his strength and conditioning assistant with the Senior and Under-21 Tipperary Football Team. That turned out to be a great year for my development, my first insight into a high performance set up. We had great success on the field, the under 21 team won the Munster championship and got to the All-Ireland final, while the Seniors made huge strides as well. Since then I’ve also been involved in training the Laois Senior football team, training the players based in Dublin while Noel was the main man down in Laois.
